The usual answer: it's the hard drive
If your computer takes minutes to become usable after you switch it on, and then continues to stutter and hang while you use it, the cause is almost certainly a mechanical hard drive.
Mechanical drives have physically spinning platters and a moving head. That mechanism is dramatically slower than every other part of a computer: slower than the processor, slower than the memory, by orders of magnitude. Modern Windows expects storage to be fast, and on a mechanical drive it spends most of its time waiting.
You can verify this yourself in about thirty seconds. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and look at the Disk column. If it's pinned near 100% while you're not doing anything demanding, the drive is your bottleneck and no amount of cleaning up will change it.
The fix that actually works
Replacing that mechanical drive with a solid-state drive is the most effective upgrade available for an older computer, and it isn't close. Boot times typically drop from minutes to seconds and the general stuttering largely disappears.

Things worth trying first, free
- Free up space. Under roughly 10% free and Windows starts struggling. Empty the recycle bin, clear Downloads, uninstall what you don't use.
- Cut the startup list. Task Manager → Startup. Most of what loads with Windows doesn't need to.
- Restart properly. Not sleep: an actual restart. Machines left running for weeks accumulate problems.
- Check the browser. Dozens of tabs and a pile of extensions will bring any computer to its knees, however new.
- Let updates finish. A machine mid-update is slow for a reason and will recover on its own.
When it's not the drive
It got slow suddenly, with pop-ups or unfamiliar programs. That's an infection, not age: see virus removal, from $80.
It's slow and running hot, with loud fans. Likely dust-clogged cooling. The machine throttles itself to avoid overheating, and the slowness is a symptom of that.
Only one program is slow. Then it's that program, not the computer.
It's slow and making clicking or grinding noises. Stop. That's a failing drive and it's about to take your files with it: go to data recovery and don't run anything else on it.
Do I need a new computer?
Usually not, and we'll tell you honestly. If the machine is otherwise healthy, an SSD (and sometimes more memory alongside it) transforms it for a fraction of the price of replacing it. If it genuinely isn't worth saving, we'll say that too rather than take the job.
