Choose on convenience, not cost
Remote at $85/hr if the problem is software — it is the fastest option available and you see everything we do. A $50 pick-up if the machine needs opening. On-site at $130/hr if the fault is the house rather than the computer, and from here that is a few minutes.
Whichever you pick, the quote comes first. If the cheapest option for your problem happens to be the one that pays us least, that is still what we will recommend.
The recurring Terwillegar calls
Two-storey houses with dead spots upstairs. The router is wherever the provider installed it, which is wherever the cable entered the building, which is almost never where it should be for coverage.
Printers that stopped being found. This is nearly always the printer picking up a new address after a router reboot rather than anything wrong with the printer, and it is a ten-minute remote fix once you know that.
And machines that have simply got slow. Usually the drive rather than age — an SSD upgrade is $120 and does more for a five-year-old laptop than anything else you could spend money on.
Working from home for someone else
A lot of people here have a work laptop managed by an employer's IT department and a home network managed by nobody. When a video call fails, the employer's helpdesk looks at the laptop, finds it healthy, and the problem stays.
That gap is the one we can close. It is usually the network rather than the machine, and it is not something a remote helpdesk in another city can see.
It is worth saying what this is not. We will not touch a laptop your employer has locked down, and would not want to — that is their asset and their policy. What we can do is establish whether the fault is on their side or yours, which is usually the argument you are stuck in.
What people here ask first.
Can you fix my work laptop?
Depends who manages it. If your employer locks it down we may not be able to touch it — but the home network it depends on is fair game, and that is usually where the fault is anyway.
Why does my printer keep disappearing?
Almost always its address changed after a router restart. It is a quick remote fix, and we can set it so it stops happening.
Is an SSD upgrade worth it on an older laptop?
For most machines it is the single best $120 you can spend. If it is not worth it on yours, we will say so before you pay.
How soon could someone come out?
We are open every day, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Terwillegar is minutes away. Call and we will tell you honestly when we can be there.
Our video calls drop but speed tests are fine. Why?
Speed tests measure the wrong thing. Calls fail on stability and latency, not raw speed, and the usual culprit is Wi-Fi congestion rather than your connection.
Can you move everything to a new computer?
Yes — files, mail, settings and software. Normally a bench job with the $50 pick-up covering collection and return.
