Riverbend is north-west of us across Whitemud Creek — close enough that a pick-up is a short round trip and an on-site visit is not an expedition.

All three options are cheap from here

Most software faults get solved remotely at $85/hr, generally the same day you call. Anything needing the machine opened up goes on the $50 pick-up, collected and returned. On-site at $130/hr is for problems that only exist inside your house.

We say which one your problem needs before you commit to anything, and quotes are free.

Older houses, newer demands

Riverbend has a lot of established homes, and established homes carry network equipment installed for a much smaller job than it is now doing. The signs are familiar: fine in the room with the router, unreliable two doors away, unusable in the basement.

Mature trees and thick walls do not help, and neither does the habit of hiding the router in a cupboard because it is ugly. Solving it properly means looking at the building, which is why it is one of the few genuinely on-site problems.

The other common one here is a machine that has been running since it was bought and has never had anything done to it. Not broken, just slow — and usually the drive.

Practices and home offices

There are a lot of small professional practices operating out of houses around here. If you are storing anything you could not reconstruct — client records, the books, twenty years of photographs — the conversation worth having is about backup, not repair.

Ask us what happens if the drive fails tonight. If the answer involves the word “probably”, that is the thing to fix first, and it is cheaper than the recovery afterwards.

Recovery here is $400 flat with nothing to pay if it fails, which sounds reassuring until you notice that a working backup costs a fraction of that and never involves the phrase ‘we will try’. We would rather sell you the cheap thing first.

What people here ask first.

How much to look at a computer that is just slow?

Diagnostic is $50/hr and it is usually quick. The common fix is an SSD at $120, and we will tell you if the machine is not worth it.

Can you improve Wi-Fi in an older house?

Usually, and usually without upgrading your internet plan. It is a placement and coverage problem, which needs somebody in the building.

What if my drive has already failed?

Stop using it and call. Data recovery is $400 flat with nothing to pay if we cannot get the files back, and the $50 pick-up covers collection.

Do you do the work at my house or take it away?

Whichever is cheaper for your problem. Hardware is better at the bench; network faults have to be done in the building.

How do I know if my backup is actually working?

Restore something from it. If nobody has ever done that, you have a copy rather than a backup — and that distinction is exactly what insurers now ask about.

Can you clean up a computer full of junk software?

Yes. Virus and malware removal is $80 flat. If it is not malware and just years of accumulated clutter, it usually falls under the $50/hr diagnostic.
